PIV – Condensation Solutions

HOW IT WORKS

It is estimated that one in five Irish households are poorly ventilated, leading to problems with streaming windows, mould growth and poor indoor air quality. Many older homes are inadequately ventilated and factors such as occupant lifestyles, steps towards energy-efficiency measures like wall and loft insulation, and a rise in fuel poverty all contribute to condensation dampness and its associated problems.

As new, ever more airtight houses are now being built with better construction methods and materials, the performance of the chosen ventilation method must be right, otherwise condensation dampness and poor indoor air quality will inevitably appear.

Our PIV units provide whole home ventilation based on the popular Positive Input Ventilation principle. Essentially, the concept is to gently introduce fresh, filtered air into the dwelling ensuring that old, contaminated moisture laden air is continuously diluted, displaced and replaced with good quality air. The result is improved air quality and a healthy living environment in which condensation cannot exist.

Our PIV ranges are quick, cost-effective and easy to install, making them an ideal condensation solution for both new build and retrofit applications.

The Passyfier Dehumidifier Vent

The awareness around the greenhouse effect is now making everyone want to conserve energy. Not everyone will be doing it, but they are aware of it. If you want to stop heat escaping your home, then the best way is to insulate your property and conserve energy this way. Regrettably, due to this at least two gallons per day on average for every household moisture escapes and can lead to condensation on cold surfaces.

The dilemma has therefore been to insulate and invite condensation and the dreaded black mould, which often goes with it and threatens the health of the very young and elderly, or to carry on losing heat and suffering draughts.

Well, it´s a thinking person´s vent. It combines a through-the-wall, “warm” telescopic sleeve with a slab of mineral wool inside, louvred vent internally and an appropriate external cover. The mineral wool is transparent to the exodus of moisture vapour while simultaneously preventing cold draughts so that people do not block them up with old newspapers or stick posters over them. They can easily be retrofitted in response to condensation call-outs, during refurbishment programmes or installed directly in newbuild. A typical house needs about four/five Passyfier units. Quite often an existing 225 x 150 mm (9″ x 6″) airbrick is replaced with a Passyfier Sleeved Vent Kit.

Passyfiers take advantage of the differential partial moisture vapour pressure that is normally higher inside an occupied building than on the outside. This pressure is completely independent of that in the air. For example, a typically cold foggy Irish winter´s day (a real no-no for condensation) may have an outside temperature of 5°C and humidity at 100%, while the inside temperature is at a comfortable 20°C. Keeping the inside relative humidity to 70% generates a difference between inside and outside moisture vapour pressure of 8 millibars, ample to alleviate condensation problems, all this with little or no heat loss.
